The eighth (8th) Assembly of the Sunyani Municipal on Monday 12th February failed to elect a Presiding Member after two rounds of voting. In the first round, three candidates Mr. Joseph Appiah Mensah, Mr. Isaac Yaw Brenya and Mr. Abdul Razak Abdulai failed to obtain the two-thirds majority approval of at least 34 valid votes cast.

The first round saw the three candidates obtaining 24, 6 and 16 votes respectively. The second round saw the two leading candidates Mr. Joseph Appiah-Mensah and Mr. Abdul Razak Abdulai failing to obtain at least the 34 votes needed to win as the results were 26 and 21 votes respectively.

Presiding over the elections, the Electoral Commissioner Mr. Opoku said that the inaugural and swearing-in ceremony is in fulfillment of section 6 of section 18 of the Local Government Act, 2016 (ACT 936). He said that, since none of the candidates was able to obtain the two-thirds majority after the two rounds of voting, re-election would be held within ten working days as enshrine in the constitution.
