
Odeneho Dr Afram Brempong III, the Paramount Chief of the Suma Traditional Area in the Jaman North District, has been elected to represent the Bono Region as Council of State member.
In an election conducted and supervised by the Electoral Commission in Sunyani on Tuesday 11th February, 2025. Odeneho Dr Brempong III secured 16 out of the 24 valid votes cast.
His closest contender, Nana Aful Kyere, received four votes, while Umar Adam Sulemana and Nicholas Saddari secured two votes each. The other contestants—Dominic Adu-Gyimah, Nana Ankamah Bosomtwe II, Mary Nana Adjeiwaa, Daniel Owusu Brempong, and Eric Ko Appiah—did not receive any votes.
Earlier, Peter Kwadwo Ackom withdrew from the race, reducing the number of contestants to nine.
Odeneho Dr Brempong III expressed gratitude to the delegates for their confidence repose in him. He pledged to work diligently, drawing on his experience in academia and the business sector, to advance the development of the Bono Region.
The election of Council of State members is not open to public voting but through an Electoral College made up of two representatives nominated by each District Assembly. According to Article 89(1) of the 1992 Constitution, the Council of State is “to counsel the President in the performance of his functions.”
Membership includes the President of the National House of Chiefs; one representative from each region and 11 other members who include a former Chief Justice, a former Chief of the Defence Staff and a former Inspector-General of Police appointed by the President in consultation with Parliament. The Council of State elects its chairman from among its members.
The members hold office until the end of the term of office of the President unless a member resigns, becomes permanently incapacitated or the appointment is terminated by the President on grounds of stated misbehaviour or of inability to perform his/her functions arising from infirmity of body or mind, and with the prior approval of Parliament.
Among its duties, the President can request the Council to consider a bill published in the Gazette or passed by Parliament. The Council of State also shall consider and advise the President or any other authority in respect of any appointment which is required by the Constitution or any other law to be made in accordance with the advice of, or in consultation with the Council of State.
